I am from chicago and there have been times where i wouldn't warm up the car before i went to work ... could this be part of the problem too?
sounds like you have a broken or RUSTED heat sheild and when you step on the brakes the engine mounts are allowing the engine to 'lunge' and stress the broken sheilds causing the noise
